Virgin’s Unlimited Music Shrinks to 40 Files

Virgin Media’s grandiose plans for unlimited music downloads on subscription seem to have shrunk in size dramatically. The new plan offers a downloadable 40 MP3s in a month for £15.

The initial announcements for this scheme had outlined an unlimited download option. It was mooted with the objective of rendering illegal download unattractive by making legal and risk-free music download not only easy but also economical.

Universal Music had backed the Virgin idea, claiming that the unlimited plan would provide an effective and viable solution to the growing problem of illegal download and piracy. Sony and EMI, the other giants in the music industry, never really appreciated Virgin’s plan, more so because Virgin had collaborated with Universal Music. They continue to be extremely doubtful if the plan will really help curb illegal downloads.

It is believed that unlimited downloads at economy prices will hit digital music sales. BSkyB had also announced plans for music downloads on subscription, but these are yet to crystallise.

The proposed launch of Virgin’s scheme scheduled this Christmas relies heavily on support from all the big names in the music sector. With Sony and EMI still hesitating to enter into a partnership, Virgin may have serious difficulties in going ahead with the launch.
